Be Careful What You Say About New Year's Resolutions…

  • Minutes Read

It’s still early into the New Year but already people have given up on the New Year’s resolutions. I hope you’re not one of them. If you are don’t worry there’s still plenty of time to get back on track you just have to be careful what you say.

Broken New Year’s Resolutions

Surely, at least once in your life, you have made New Year’s Resolutions. And most likely, you have broken at least one of those resolutions.

Come to think of it, why do some people have such negative thinking towards resolutions?

Whenever a friend says, “Oh, my New Year’s resolution is…” some would just scoff, chuckle and say, “Yeah, right – New Year’s resolutions.”

This thinking towards resolutions is something that shows us how powerful such simple words can be. If that is your view towards resolutions, well, guess what it brings you – broken resolutions.

Change the Words

Now, think about a promise you have made to somebody. You probably did everything you could to fulfill that promise because it is a promise. You changed your priorities, thought of your other commitments, and made sure that you fulfilled that promise.

People have a different connotation with the word ‘promise.’ Most of the time, people take promises more seriously.

Think about this: you might have promised yourself that you will buy that new mobile phone when you get the chance – and you did. You did because you promised.

But when you say last year’s resolution was to lose weight, and you didn’t, you just showed yourself how unimportant resolutions are for you. You must create an equally high importance on your resolutions as you do your promises because your word is your word whether it’s to yourself or someone else. It’s much easier to to let yourself down then to let others down since you only have yourself to be accountable to.

No longer let this be your pattern make a change today to choose your words wisely and follow through. Try this: make a promise or commitment to yourself this New Year – not a resolution. Stick to it and follow through for yourself, I’m sure that you will fulfill it and accomplish your goals in 2010.

  1. This is so true Antonio, I have a friend, before new year came he said to himself that he would quit smoking. Guess what, after a week or two I saw him smoking again. Geez, I wonder when will he learn.ciao!

  2. Hi Antonio,

What a great tip – call them “promises” not “resolutions.”

I know I am more inclined to go for a healthy walk on those days that I think of it as a gift to myself rather than a chore I must complete.

    Best Regards!

  3. Some people say that promises are meant to be broken, what kind of people are they. Well, it’s up to them. A promise is a promise, we should keep our word.^^
